Horse Conch

Horse Conch Characteristics and Information

The horse conch (Triplofusus giganteus) is a large predatory sea snail that inhabits tropical and subtropical ocean waters. It's so large, in fact, that it's considered the largest gastropod in the US. A typical adult horse conch shell can range anywhere from 12-24 inches in length, but the actual snail residing inside it is much smaller.

Horse conchs feast on a wide variety of aquatic wildlife, including abalone, periwinkles, crabs, whelks and even other conchs. Like all gastropods, the carnivorous horse conch slowly squirm their way across the ocean floor in search of food. Their exceptionally large size gives them the ability to consume a variety of wildlife.

Horse Conch: The Official State Shell of Florida

In 1969, state officials declared the horse conch (Triplofusus giganteus) as Florida's official state shell. This enormous specimen is beautiful yet equally impressive in terms of power. Horse conchs are carnivorous predatory snails that roam the ocean in search of other gastropods to feast on. Their incredible power combined with their majestic appearance make it the perfect match for Florida's official shell.

While the horse conch can be found throughout the southeastern coast of the US, the waters off Florida have a significantly higher population of these large gastropods. Divers and beach-goers can find these specimens in the waters off Florida and the surrounding southeastern states down to a depth of 100 feet. Be warned, though, some of the specimens are capable of growing up to two feet long, so you'll want to bring a mesh bag or net along with you!

Florida isn't the only state with an official shell. As of 2013, 14 of the 23 coastal states have their own official shell. The bordering state of Georgia, for instance, named the knobbed whelk (Busycon carica) as their state shell, while North Carolina's shell is the scotch bonnet (Semicassis granulata).

Horse Conch Shell Appearance and Description

The single most notable feature of horse conch shells is their size. As previously stated, these specimens are capable of growing to over 2 feet in length. Horse conch shells typically feature a long, narrow canal with 7-10 full spirals (also known as whorls). These shells are quite pointy with several different cords at the tip, creating a uniquely distinct appearance that's unlike any other.

As with most gastropods, the shell of a conch shell changes throughout its life. During the early days of a horse conch's life, their shell will possess an iridescent pink coloring. In the later years, however, it will change into darker grey coloring with a thin organic coating known as periostracum blotting the exterior. The good news is that you can remove this thin organic coating if you prefer a more "polished" look.

Horse Conch Shell Buying Tips

  • Pay close attention to the horse conch shell's size, as this is a primary factor in its value. The larger the shell, the more value it holds.
  • Look for imperfections such as chips, discoloration and barnacle encrustations. Conch shells with barnacles are worth less money, but you can still clean them up by referring to our previous post here.
  • Where was the horse conch shell taken from? Although you won't always be able to determine this information, some items will list this in their description.
  • Check the color of the horse conch shell before purchasing. Some people prefer a lighter color, while others prefer darker colored shells.
