What Is The Queen Conch?

The queen conch (Lobatus gigas) is a large gastropod mollusk similar in appearance to a sea snail. Because they are in the Strombidae family, they are considered true conchs; the same of which can't be said for horse conchs. Queen conch shells are captivating with their large outer lip featuring brilliant detail and a soft pink center. Native Americans used the shells to craft various tools and weapons with.

Queen conchs posses a powerful, hooked operculum that's used to help it move around on the ocean floor. In order to move, it thrusts its operculum forward while using a foot to claw in the same direction. This gives the queen conch enough to power to move its large body and shell across the ocean floor with ease. Queen conchs are quite capable at moving and traversing through the ocean thanks to their powerful operculum.

If you were to take a peek inside a queen conch's shell, you would see two large tentacles; the larger of the two is provides the queen conch with sight, while the smaller tentacle provides the senses of smell and touch.

Queen Conch Diet and Feeding Habits

Queen conchs are herbivores, meaning they only eat plant-based matter and not other animals. Their diet consists of what's readily available in their surrounding. Some of the most common types of food consumed by them include algae, seagrass and turtle grass. Divers oftentimes find queen conchs resting in beds of seagrass where food is plentiful.

It was widely believed that queen conchs were carnivores, but this theory was laid to rest through close observation of the species. It's important to note, however, that several other species of conchs are in fact carnivores.
